A Living Wage update from Lynn Cunningham, Living Wage Accreditation Officer based in Dundee …

I’ll have been in post exactly 6 months at the beginning of Living Wage Week on 5th November, based in Dundee and working mainly with Dundee organisations.  And the response from employers across all sectors has been really positive. With the number of accredited Living Wage employers in Dundee doubling over the past six months, the commitment to paying people a decent wage – a Living Wage – is evident.

I’ve worked closely with the team at Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce, attending a fair number of their great networking events, allowing me to speak to many people from the business community. For those of you who haven’t yet heard – Dundee is on the up, going through a renaissance with the Waterfront development and the highly anticipated opening of the V&A Dundee next year. There’s a sense of excitement that this is bringing opportunity and prosperity to many people in Dundee; and it will. Businesses are helping ensure more of Dundee’s citizens can share in its growth and good fortune. They are stepping up and showing leadership through Living Wage accreditation.  From micro-enterprises to national leaders in their field Dundee’s business community is recognising the value of Living Wage accreditation.

It’s not only the business community that’s showing commitment to making Dundee a fairer city to live and work in. The third sector in Dundee contributes a lot to the local economy, directly employing 2700 people. It also contributes a lot in the fight against poverty through the services it delivers, so for an ever growing number of third sector organisations, Living Wage accreditation reflects their value base and is the obvious thing to do.

In recognition of this commitment to paying the Living Wage, Dundee TSI (Third Sector Interface) is holding a celebrating breakfast during Living Wage Week – on Wednesday 8th November. Keep an eye on our Living Wage Week  page for further information.
