Living Wage Week 2014


We held a number of different events across Scotland to celebrate Living Wage Week 2014:


Monday 3rd November

9.30am - New Living Wage Rate Announced  

Mr John Swinney Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth in the Scottish Government formally announced the new Living Wage rate.

Venue: SSE, 200 Dunkeld Rd, Perth PH1 3GH


Tuesday 4th November

The Scottish Living Wage Campaign delivered a session to a Higher Modern Studies pupils at Morrisons Academy in Crieff. The session covered low pay in Scotland and in-work poverty as well as the Living Wage.

Wednesday 5th November

Standard Life hosted a  business breakfast (8.30-10am) on the Living Wage.

Satwat Rehman, One Parent Families Scotland

The above panel discussed the benefits and potential challenges in their journeys to become Living Wage employers.

Thursday 6th November

Dundee City Council and Dundee Chamber of Commerce held a business breakfast (8.30-10am) on the Living Wage.

In attendance:

Rachel McEwen, Director of Sustainability, SSE

Neil Harkin, Deputy Director, 2020 Business Insight

Julie McGahan, Living Wage Programme Manager, The Poverty Alliance

This event discussed the Living Wage in the context of Dundee, from the perspective of both small and larger businesses.

Thursday 6th November

Living Wage Week Link-up: Canada/ Scotland/ New Zealand

8pm - Hamilton, Scotland: Stephen Smellie, UNISION with Sarah Wiktorski and Julie McGahan from The Poverty Alliance

8am- Hamilton, New Zealand: Rose Black and Anna Cox, Anglican Action and Annie Newman and Lyndy McIntyre from Living Wage New Zealand

3pm- Hamilton, Ontario, Canada: Tom Cooper, Judy Travis and Deirdre Pike, Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction and Donna Jean Forrester Gill from Living Wage Canada (Vibrant Communities Canada).


Saturday 8th November

"Where next for the Living Wage?"


Organised by Jayne Baxter MSP with support from Unite the Union. 

Speakers were: - Jayne Baxter MSP, a local employer, a Unite the Union representative and Julie McGahan, Living Wage Programme Manager (Scotland).
