Quarriers Gain Living Wage Accreditation and 1150 Workers Receive a Pay Rise

Quarriers is one of Scotland’s leading social care charities which provides support to thousands of people every day through over 100 services across Scotland. From adults with disabilities, children and families, young homeless people, to carers and people affected by epilepsy, the charity is dedicated to improving people’s lives. Now, by becoming an accredited Living Wage Employer, Quarriers have made a commitment to better the lives of their staff. Their pledge will see 1150 workers receive a pay increase, ensuring that everyone working at Quarriers, regardless of whether they are direct employees or third-party contracted staff; receive a minimum hourly wage of £8.75.

Reflecting on this commitment, Alice Harper, Chief Executive Officer of Quarriers told us:

“At Quarriers, our staff are at the centre of everything we do and contribute daily to the high quality outcomes provided for all those we support and work with. We understand the importance of our staff as they are responsible for driving our values and breathing life into our vision and genuinely transforming the lives of the people we support. We know from speaking to our staff that salaries will always be important and we are delighted to strive towards being an employer of choice paying not only the real Living Wage, but in excess of the current real Living Wage.”

By becoming accredited Living Wage Employers, Quarriers have joined the growing network of over 1200 employers across Scotland who recognise that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay and Peter O’Neill, Support Worker at Quarriers told us:

As a support worker, I am really pleased that Quarriers support their employees as well as the people we support and I am delighted that Quarriers has signed up to the real Living Wage.”

Recognising the significance of Quarriers, both to the people who benefit from the services and those who work for the organisation, Derek Mackay MSP for Renfrewshire North and West commented:

As an important employer who plays an important role in my constituency, it was fantastic news to hear Quarriers are now an accredited Living Wage Employer. As we approach Living Wage Week, I commend them for doing this and encourage other businesses and organisations to follow suit.”

Quarriers arreditation was also welcome by the trad union UNISON. Deborah Clarke, Head of Community for UNISON said

“I am absolutely delighted that Quarriers has taken this huge step and become a Living Wage employer. They are leading the way in terms of the larger charities that UNISON works with and we are keen to see this continue whilst calling on others to follow suit.”

“My message to UNISON members is that this announcement means that they can be assured of Quarriers commitment to paying them a fair wage for the work that they do, both today and in the coming years.”

Living Wage Scotland are proud to welcome Quarriers to the real Living Wage Movement and are delighted to see how many lives this commitment will benefit. Receiving the real Living Wage enables workers to become more included in society, better provide for their families, and feel that their value and dedication is recognised by their employer. We hope that this move by Quarriers will encourage more employers to follow suit by becoming accredited.
