Our Living Wage accredited employers are doing their bit for #InThisTogether
Barbara McGinley, owner of An Clachan Café in Glasgow, had to close her business due to coronavirus. Her three staff are in furlough. Despite income not coming she decided to help where she could and when she saw an appeal by Glasgow Night Shelter, she decided to get in touch with them. The shelter welcomed the offer of An Clachan’s homemade veggie curry, which would provide one hot meal for the Night Shelter’s 32 residents.
Barbra also used Zero Waste Scotland’s Good to Go project and received environmentally friendly take away packaging, free of charge.
Barbara has applied for a government grant which will help her to continue to provide the Night Shelter with hot meals and provide some funding until the café is open again.
“We don’t know much about the night shelter’s guests except they’re homeless, so they’re among the most vulnerable in our society. It makes us feel useful to be helping in a small way and although things have changed for us and life is not comfortable as it was, it’s so much worse for so many.
Customers have been so supportive, on social media, before we closed and when I meet them in the park. I’m so distressed by what we’re all going through at times, but the goodwill & positivity of people just blows me away!”
We will be sharing more stories of our accredited employers’ experiences of resilience and compassion during the crisis. If you’re doing something positive for your workers, communities or the front-line, please let us know as we would love to share these stories with the network.
